We were lucky enough today to have one of our parents demonstrate to the children how things change in a vacuum. We saw a balloon blown up by putting it in a vacuum and then had great fun watching what happened to marshmallows. As the marshmallows were placed under vacuum they expanded; they got really big – once the vacuum was removed then they shrank and went really wrinkly. Finally we saw what happened to water under vacuum which was amazing – when the vacuum was applied the water boiled and then as the vacuum was released we watched as boiling water turned instantly to ice!! It was definitely a great way to start our Science Week activities
