Maths in nature

Theo found a beetle in the science garden. He noticed something about its legs. Can you see?

He said that the beetle had 3 legs on one side and 2 on the other side. He said that that was 5.

He said that it should be 3 and 3. It should have 6 legs, but one is missing.

What maths can you spot in nature? Can you spot any patterns? Theo knew that this beetle should have the same numbers of legs on both sides, this shows an understanding of doubles and symmetry.
