This week in maths club the challenge was to be engineers and build a bridge that would hold a different amount of weight, The children chose from a range of building materials to create their bridges. Most followed the idea that the bridge needed two supports and a crossing point in the middle.
We discussed how we were using measurement, shape, space, position and weight in our activity.
Despite our best efforts, unfortunately none of our bridges held up to holding more than 25g of weight… and certainly not 1Kg!
We discussed how engineering requires a lot of thought and that we needed more time and also more planning around creating and attaching our crossing platforms, similar issues experienced by real life engineers.
