Hero needed – Maple Class

In Maple class we have been learning about the Anglo-Saxon tale Beowulf.

The blurb of this book describes it as a tale that has been told for a thousand years and more.  A tale which still troubles and terrifies us now as much as it ever did…..we have loved studying this tale!

We have created word banks for describing Heorot and Hrothgar, Beowulf and the Grendel himself – the creature born of evil.

Throughout our work we have created and recorded our own “breaking news” reports as the terrible events unfolded at Heorot – it has been great to see not just reports created in school but the amazingly creative way that these were created at home and sent in for us to watch.

Next we put up our posters for a hero – the hero that Heorot and Hrothgar needed to help them defeat the Grendel – we didn’t exactly have many applicants – one to be precise.

Even though we had only one applicant we still interviewed them.  Thinking about Beowulf’s character and they way he might answer the questions asked of him we recorded our interviews of him – great role playing by those taking on Beowulf whether in school or at home; Beowulf was given the job, hopefully Heorot would now be saved.
