Year 1 & 2
Teacher: Mrs Michelle McDaid
Teaching Assistants: Mrs Lisa Howard/ Mrs Gemma Moyes, Margaret Patching
We are an enthusiastic Year 1 and 2 class taught by Mrs. McDaid and supported by our fabulous Teaching Assistants: Mrs. Moyes (Monday and Tuesday), Mrs. Howard (Wednesday-Friday) and Margaret Patching (small group support and one-to- one support Monday-Thursday).
In the morning we have the opportunity to take part in daily fitness (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) or read with our friends (Tuesday, Thursday). After registration we learn Maths through a variety of activities. Most recently we have been learning to add in different ways such as using practical objects, using a number line, by drawing our own tens and ones grid or using iPad games to challenge ourselves; we really enjoy using SumDog.
After break we have five minutes of mindful activities, such as bee breathing or listening to a story, to ensure we’re ready to focus and then practise our handwriting and then we learn English. We love writing and are currently using Anthony Browne’s ‘The Tunnel’ text. We have predicted what might happen based on the front cover, completed a drama activity called ‘conscience alley’ where we debated whether the character of Rose should go down the tunnel or not and why, learned how to write speech and now we have started writing our own fantasy stories.
After lunch we learn phonics and complete guided reading tasks. This involves activities such as one-to- one reading or reading a text as a group, comprehension work based on the text, exploring topic books with friends and writing facts. For example, our current topic is My Body so we are reading non-fiction books to find facts and filling up a class fact book.
The rest of the afternoon is then spent completing topic based challenges, such as Science, History, Geography or Art and D.T. activities. For example, the children have been learning about the five senses. We spent some time in the Science Garden to explore what we could see, smell, hear, taste and touch and then painted our experiences. The children have lots of opportunities in this time to be independent and manage their own learning. I love to see what they decide to do whether it’s building something that has inspired them or writing stories.
Term 3a – My Body
Welcome back! The children have returned very enthusiastically and ready to learn which is so lovely and makes our job so enjoyable. Our topic this term is My Body. Please have a look at the topic web to see the exciting learning that will be happening; if you feel you can support our learning in any way then please let us know.
Morning and end of school day routine
Registration is at 8.50am in the classroom. The children have the opportunity to take part in fitness on a Monday and Wednesday morning and dance on a Friday morning between 8.40am – 8.50am. At the end of the day the children will be lined up on the playground at 3.15pm. Children need to wait in line until a Teacher/Teaching Assistant sends them to an adult. If a different adult is picking up your child then please let us know in advance.
Thank you for all of your support with homework. Homework will continue to be sent out on a Wednesday to be returned please on the following Tuesday. Children are responsible for putting their homework book in the box when they come in on a Tuesday morning.
Show and tell
I have been so impressed with all the fabulous show and tell presentations so far – thank you for all of your support with preparing your child for these. This term’s show and tell is going to have an ‘All about me’ focus. Please see the dates and template sheet in your child’s book bag – children can use this to prompt them or just memorise what they would like to say. They need to speak for about 1-2 minutes and could share facts about themselves or talk about a hobby or a special interest.
Please continue to listen to your child read as often as possible; aim for 4-5 times a week for about 10 minutes. We have new My Body bookmarks to collect!
If you would like to talk to me at any time in the year please do not hesitate to come and speak to me at the end of the school day or book an appointment with the office at a convenient time; or if you have any suggestions, ideas or feedback then please let me know.
